Today is our first successful breeding with Mr. Fancy Pants (AKA Barrett).  WEEEEEEE!  I was starting to wonder if I was going to have to change the name of the ranch to "Haven Ridge's Big Gay Ranch".  I am so pleased.  Now I just have to keep at it till we get spit off.

How profitable would you say the alpaca business is?

Would it be worthwhile for someone who lives in a tiny condo in a major suburban city to buy land somewhere and invest in a pregnant female and maybe some cria?

My first interest is farming. Alpacas would be an extra, if feasible.

I just noticed that this community was closed for new members and only some members actually had posting rights... so now I've opened it up to the public, with ALL members having posting access.

Enjoy the freedom!

And here's a cute picture of our latest cria - Silver Sun's Aurora

Okay, it's a relatively old picture... I need to get some new ones. :D

This sounded pretty interesting - figured I'd share it with you guys!

The Alpaca Blanket Project has evolved from collaboration with an American mill that has world-wide reputation. Since 2003, Elderberry Creek Alpacas has been working towards creating a North American resource for the alpaca community to have for the use of our fiber. The mill spent many months with the Llama co-op developing the methods to process camelid fiber and produced blankets (throws) made with llama fiber with a mixture of sheep wool. Now we approach providing them with the first run of sorted and graded alpaca fleece so that throws will be completed in time for the 2008 holiday season.

Our desire is to enable the American alpaca farmer to produce a cost-effective American-made product, and to bring public awareness to the wonders of alpaca fleece. We do not consider this project to be in competition with AFCNA, but rather another option for the alpaca owner, and one that we believe will benefit our industry overall.

Just thought I'd share pictures of Silver Sun's newest addition!
We're still trying to come up with some good names... nothing just seems to fit this little guy.
15 lbs, dark brown(?) with a rose gray and white head. Cutest little guy. Our herdsire's first cria! Healthy, strong, and started nursing as soon as he stood up!

So before shearing, we've decided to try and get good, full-fleece pictures worthy of putting up for our stud-lists and sales-lists. As a trial run for the background... we had our gorgeous grey herdsire be our model.

Thank god for digital cameras... the amount of pictures we went through before we got something that wasn't silly (mouth open, chewing, rolling, etc etc)... heheh.

Though I'd post the picture we're going to use for this guy.  Enjoy!

Yaaay! She's better now!

Her temp this morning was about 102.4... still a small fever, so we gave her another dose of Banamine.
We just checked it again a little while ago, and she's down to 101.3! Yaaaay!
I told my mom, before we checked her temp - 'You know how you can tell that she's feeling better? Her mom doesn't care.'  Hey, it makes sense. She was crazy worried and protective of her yesterday, and today she was just munching away at hay while we were checking her out.

Thank you all for your kind words!
