questions from a non-owner
How profitable would you say the alpaca business is?

Would it be worthwhile for someone who lives in a tiny condo in a major suburban city to buy land somewhere and invest in a pregnant female and maybe some cria?

My first interest is farming. Alpacas would be an extra, if feasible.

You might look into buying and boarding with another ranch. (agisted ownership)

Another question; How does one go about buying alpacas when the prices are so steep? I'm not really sure where someone comes up with an average of $15-45k to plop down on an animal. What makes them worth that much? And do people pay in increments, or in one lump sum?

They are that pricey for a number of reasons. You would probably do best to go to the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association website to get the answers to all those questions. http://www.alpacainfo.com/

There are a lot of ranches that will accept payments, sometimes even interest free.
